Bituminous Coal

Biogenous sedimentary rock.
Bituminous coal, also called soft coal, the most abundant form of coal, intermediate in rank between subbituminous coal and anthracite. “Bituminous” means it contains traces of bitumens (petroleum-like residues like tar, crude oil, and other organic compounds). Bituminous coal occurs in abundance in coal beds mined throughout the coal basins of the eastern Appalachian Plateau and Midwestern states.
This is a sample of bituminous coal from a Cumberland River gravel bar, central Kentucky.
